In the next few weeks, I’ll be posting some ideas for encouraging children to pray and read Scripture at home. These ‘pages’ are from a prayer journal that I made for my pupils when I was teaching 7 and 8 year olds. The activities are appropriate for younger and older children as well, although the younger ones will need help from you. The instructions are addressed to the children.
Every time we pray, we are speaking with God. When we read or listen to the Bible, we hear God speaking to us. These prayer activities can help you listen to God, and hopefully they will help you enjoy spending time with him in prayer.
Here are some things for you to do:
- Make a prayer place for yourself at home. It could be in your room or in some other out-of-the-way place. It should be a quiet place where you can go each day to spend time with Jesus. You may want to cover a small table or box with a pretty cloth; put a crucifix or a picture of Jesus on the table along with a Bible or other prayer book. When you have your prayer time, you can kneel, sit or stand in your prayer place. Draw a picture of you praying in your prayer place.
- Decide on a time when you will go to your prayer place to be with God each day. Maybe the morning would be the best time for you, or after you finish your school work for the day. Or you may choose to have your prayer time right after dinner or right before bedtime. Ask your Mom and Dad to help you choose a time. As a reminder, write your prayer-time on your picture.
Spend five, ten or fifteen minutes in your prayer place each day. You may want to begin your prayer time with the Lord’s Prayer and then spend some time talking to God.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
In the following weeks, I will post other activities that involve reading and reflecting on some passages from the Bible. In the meantime, just enjoy spending quiet time with God.
